The Beauty Benefits of Smoking Cessation
A unique computer programme has allowed a group of young American students to see what they will look like as elderly people if they smoke. APRIL Age PRogression Image Launcher is a computer programme that creates a stream of images of a person's face as it changes with age, using scanned photographs of the person as they look now. According to a report in the medical journal, 'Tobacco Control', the Task Force for Tobacco-Free Women and Girls in New York decided to utilise the programme, in order to show young people how smoking can affect facial appearance. The original version of the APRIL programme ages a picture of an eight-year-old to around 80 years of age. However in this case, the programme was adapted to add about 30 years to an adolescent face in two versions; one as a non-smoker and another with the premature wrinkling and unhealthy skin tone of a person who smokes 20 cigarettes a day.
The results aren't pretty. In the video, a makeup artist transforms three smokers' faces to show them how smoking will affect their appearances in the future. Smoking is known to cause premature aging, wrinkles, stained teeth, and gum disease, among a host of other problems. BuzzFeed teamed up with a makeup artist and Dr. Taylor Hays, Director of the Nicotine Dependence Center at the Mayo Clinic to show three smokers how they will age in the next 20 to 30 years if they keep up their current smoking habits.
